Community education and self-reliance is essential to Whittier's ability to effectively respond to and recover from a disaster. With a goal of Community Readiness, Whittier is providing Life Safety Skills through the CERT training curriculum.

The basic CERT program is intended to improve community readiness (people helping people), rescuer safety, and doing the greatest good for the greatest number. CERT is a positive and realistic approach to emergency and disaster situations where community members will be initially on their own and their actions can make a difference.
